Researchers from Osaka University unpicked how hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) evade the immune system to cause chronic infection. By studying interactions of the HCV core protein and HCMV U2 protein with the host's signal peptide peptidase (SPP), the researchers found that these viral proteins prevent SPP from helping form proteins necessary for a proper immune response. This study may help development of therapies to prevent these viruses from causing chronic infection.
